RAPID CITY (AP) -" Rapid City has collected 300 pounds of used holiday light strands in the first week of a city conservation effort.

The Rapid City Journal reports the Christmas light recycling campaign is collecting the lights to keep the metal within the strands out of landfills. The city's Solid Waste Division is heading the effort, which the city's website says collected approximately 12,700 pounds of lights last year.

Workers have placed collection bins around the city in locations including the Rapid City Public Library, the City-School Administration Building, the Journey Museum and three Family Thrift Stores.

The collection bins will be available through January 2015.
