KENNEBEC-A Presho man accused of attempting to kill another man with a shotgun in October pleaded guilty but mentally ill to aggravated assault Thursday morning.

Mark Cook, 56, will be sentenced for the Class 3 felony on June 6.

The Lyman County Sheriff's Office found a man with a gunshot injury to the leg at a farm facility just south of Presho on the morning of Oct. 26. The man said when he had arrived at the facility, Cook was there with a shotgun and used it to shoot the man in the leg after the two argued. Cook also reportedly said he was going to kill the man.

The man was reportedly able to get into his truck to avoid Cook, who had allegedly loaded another round into the shotgun's chamber after shooting the man. Cook drove away and was later taken into custody at his residence.

Attempted murder and additional aggravated assault charges were dropped after Cook's plea.
