Planners want more time for sign proposal at Taco John's

A proposed electronic reader board at Taco John's needs to be studied before it is approved, the Mitchell Planning and Zoning Commission decided Tuesday.

A proposed electronic reader board at Taco John's needs to be studied before it is approved, the Mitchell Planning and Zoning Commission decided Tuesday.

The fast-food restaurant at 701 N. Sanborn Blvd. wants to add an electronic sign. It needs a permit from the planners.

The planners gave tentative approval, with conditions, at their May 14 meeting, but only had an artist's rendering to review and no one from the restaurant was present to answer questions, according to City Planner Neil Putnam.

The sign would have red flashing lights, which the Public Safety Department is concerned might interfere with the view of the traffic lights at the intersection of Sanborn Boulevard and Seventh Avenue, according to Putnam.

There was also a question if the new, larger sign would intrude on the sidewalk, he said.

That was addressed, Putnam said, and the sign will not do so.

City Attorney Randy Stiles and the Mitchell Police Division will ensure the proposed sign will not interfere with the traffic lights, Putnam said, and then report back to the commission.

If no problem is determined to exist, the sign will be approved. If not, another plan will be requested, he said.

The planners also:

  • Recommended approval of the application of Dennis and Janelle Ven Osdel for a variance for a side yard setback of 1 foot, 6 inches instead of the required 3 feet for a new garage and fence at 1116 E. Fourth Ave.
  • Recommended approval of the application of Lou and James Sebert for a variance to construct an accessory building with a height variance of 25 feet instead of the mandated 17 feet, and a size variance of 3,200 square feet instead of the mandated 1,050 square feet, at a property legally described as Sebert Tract 1, a subdivision of Lot A, the southwest quarter of the southwest quarter of Section 23, T 103 N, R 60 W of the fifth prime meridian in Davison County.
  • Recommended approval of the application of James and Kim Sebert for a variance for a back yard setback of 10 feet instead of the required 30 feet, at 507 Charles St.
  • Recommended approval of the application of Lou and Carol Sebert for a variance for a back yard setback of 8 feet instead of the standard 30 feet, at 513 Charles St.
  • Recommended approval of the plats of Lots G and F of the J.A. Harris first addition, a subdivision of Lot 2 of the west half of Section 31, T 104, R 60 of the fifth prime meridian in Davison County.
  • Recommended approval of the plat of D Nemec Tract A in the southeast quarter of the southeast quarter, and the northeast quarter of the southeast quarter, of Section 36, T 104, R 61 west of the fifth prime meridian in Davison County.

All the variances and plats still need final council approval and will be on the agenda at Monday's council meeting.

  • Gave Corona Village, located at 1101 S. Burr St., permission for a "facelift" to the building, according to Putnam.
  • Set a tentative date of 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, for a public hearing on the proposed new city zoning code.

Putnam and Stiles spent several months drafting the revisions to the city code.
The meeting will most likely be held at City Hall Council Chambers, Putnam said.

  • Held the meeting on a Tuesday because of the Memorial Day holiday.
