PINE RIDGE - The expansion of a stray dog roundup on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is on hold while new tribal officials take office.

The Oglala Sioux Housing Authority rounded up dogs in the town of Pine Ridge after 8-year-old Jayla Rodriguez was killed by a pack of dogs Nov. 18 while she was sledding.

The roundup was to be expanded reservation-wide. Housing Authority spokeswoman Donna Lamont tells the Rapid City Journal that the wider roundup has been delayed. A new tribal president and council members elected last month were taking office Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the LightShine Canine rescue group continues to rescue adoptable strays. The group estimates it has saved about 120 dogs.
