A Pierre woman arrested in Murdo last summer was sentenced Monday to six years and five months in federal prison for selling meth.

Melissa Scull, 39, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute meth on Dec. 5 and was ordered to spend four years on supervised release following her release from prison.

Scull was one of three people arrested June 23 at a gas station in Murdo by a South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper who had followed a vehicle thought to be transporting a large amount of meth. Scull, Frank Miller Jr., of Pierre, and Charles Olson, of Fort Pierre, were reportedly driving 236 grams of meth from Denver in the vehicle, which belonged to Miller.

After the trooper found the meth and assorted drug- and distribution-related paraphernalia in the vehicle, all three people were charged with possession of meth, possession with intent to distribute meth and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Federal charges were filed against Scull and Miller in July, and state charges against all three were dropped over the winter. No federal charges have been filed against Olson. Factual basis statements filed with the court indicate Scull and Miller had been involved in a conspiracy to distribute meth in the area of Pierre and Fort Pierre between Feb. 1, 2019, and their federal indictment on July 16.

Miller was sentenced Feb. 25 to 57 months in prison, also for conspiracy to distribute meth. Like Miller, Scull was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
