PIERRE (AP) -- An early morning house fire in Pierre sent a man to the hospital and killed two cats.

Fire Chief Bill Alexander tells the media that the man suffered burns on his hands and face and also smoke inhalation. The injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Alexander says the fire started shortly after 3:30 a.m. Wednesday in the home's living room. The cause was not immediately determined. The chief estimated damage to the home at between $15,000 and $20,000.
