Brookings author Chuck Cecil spoke on the history of prohibition in South Dakota during a book-signing event at the Dakota Discovery Museum Friday. Cecil wrote "Astride the White Mule," which tells of the state's long, tangled, and at times violent battle over booze. During the talk, he displayed a bootlegger's half-pint bottle, and noted that it was actually less than a half pint, giving the illegal purveyor of alcohol another edge. (Tom Lawrence/Republic)
