PARKSTON -- Parkston Elementary Principal Rob Monson has resigned.

Monson announced his resignation May 14 at the Parkston school board meeting. He is leaving the principal's office he has worked in for 15 years to become the executive director for School Administrators of South Dakota.

Monson said he has been discussing the move with his family for some time. He will also resign from his position as president of the National Association of Elementary School Principals.

"It was a very hard decision," he said. "I just thought this would be a new challenge and a new opportunity."

As SASD executive director, Monson will oversee six professional organizations relating to school administration in South Dakota. Monson said he will be responsible for staying in touch with state education policy and working to promote the needs of the state's schools, as well as providing professional training opportunities and organizing conventions.

While SASD is based in Pierre, Monson said he will only work out of that office a few days per week and does not plan to permanently relocate. He lives in Parkston with his wife and three children, two of whom are still attending school in the district. Monson is a graduate of Parkston High School.

Parkston School District began accepting applications for Monson's position shortly after he announced his resignation. According to Parkston School Superintendent Shayne McIntosh, the board will decide on a review process before the application period ends June 14.
