If the foreign policy of the Bush administration is a success, we wonder what failure looks like. For six years, the president and his defense and foreign policy teams have been in charge. In that time, the United States has gone from a nation at peace to a nation enmeshed in a war that now is longer than World War II. ...

The partisan thick skulls who still want to blame the Clinton administration for the condition of the world apparently can't count. Bush and his team have been in power for six years. Their foreign policy has been a disaster, and the results confirm as much. Their defense policy looked good when the nation responded to 9/11 by going after al-Qaida and its allies in Afghanistan. But the poorly planned (not militarily, but the aftermath) invasion and occupation of Iraq has inflamed the Middle East and put the world at risk, not only from a spreading armed conflict but also from economic dislocation because of the potential disruption of oil supplies.

Apologists for the president and his advisers can engage in all the spin they want. But objective evidence does not lie: U.S. foreign and defense policies in the past six years are rushing headlong toward one of the biggest failures in recent history.
