PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- State Education Secretary Tom Oster (OH'-ster) says the federal No Child Left Behind law has faults but is responsible for higher student achievement.
Speaking to the House Education Committee on Wednesday, Oster said the federal law's emphasis on increasing test scores encouraged South Dakota schools to focus on student performance.
He said he hopes the Obama administration can "make some tweaks" to No Child Left Behind. Oster said despite complaints about the law, it has boosted student achievement.
