One killed in Brule County two-vehicle crash

KIMBALL — One person was killed and another injured Thursday night in a two-vehicle crash near Kimball.

Names of those involved are not yet being released pending the notification of family members.

A Peterbilt semi-truck and trailer was eastbound on Interstate 90 when it was struck by a 2014 Toyota 4 Runner SUV that was westbound in the eastbound lanes. The crash occurred at about 10:55 p.m. near mile marker 280, about three miles west of Kimball, according to a release from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

The 30-year-old male driver of the 4 Runner was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt. The 60-year-old male driver of the Peterbilt, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained serious non-life threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Chamberlain.

Both eastbound lanes of Interstate 90 were temporarily closed to traffic following the crash.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol, a part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, continues to investigate the crash.
