The Department of Public Safety on Tuesday released the names of those involved in a fatal crash in Pennington County on Thursday, Sept. 9.

Crash reports indicate that two occupants were in a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado travelling westbound on SD 44 — about 45 miles west of Rapid City — at approximately 6 p.m. when the driver failed to negotiate a right turn. The vehicle crossed the centerline, entered the ditch and rolled.

Candace Arapahoe, 40, of New Town, North Dakota, was pronounced dead on the scene, and Russell Martinez, 22, of Rapid City, was transported to a Rapid City hospital with sustained serious, non-life threatening injuries.

Both vehicle occupants were not wearing seat belts and both were thrown from the pickup. It is unclear which of the occupants was driving.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
