RAPID CITY (AP) -- About 100 people gathered at Rapid Creek to remember a 10-year-old Hermosa boy who drowned there a year ago.

Trevor Whitehead drowned while playing near the creek at Rapid City on May 21, 2011. His body was pulled from the water a day later after an extensive search.

According to media reports, on Monday evening 100 brown paper bag luminaries lined the roadway to the spot where a makeshift memorial of stuffed animals, crosses and other items stands. Family members and friends came with flowers and candles, and sang songs and told stories.

Kevin and Linda Hayes, the grandparents who raised the boy, say they hope the candlelight memorial service can become an annual event.
