MOUNT VERNON -- Alan Greenway died Friday night, according to an obituary published in today’s edition.

Greenway, of Mount Vernon, had been battling Leukemia since 2012. He was 56. He died at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

He is the father of Minnesota Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway. Greenway missed practice on Friday for the Vikings, but he played Sunday against the Dolphins.

Alan Greenway’s funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m on Tuesday at the Tom Young Community Center in Mount Vernon. According to an obituary on Page A6, burial will be in the Mount Vernon Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service at the Salem Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon. A memorial fund has been established. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Greenway’s obituary said he graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1976. On Oct. 2, 1976, he married Julie Schoenfelder in Mitchell. He farmed at Mount Vernon for many years and was a rural mail carrier.

He was a member of the Pork Council, the Mount Vernon Board of Education and Mount Vernon Elevator Board. In 2010, he received the USPS Hero Award.
