MOUNT VERNON: Mount Vernon students lend voices to state choirs

The Mount Vernon Oral Interp students placed first overall in the District Contest Nov. 6 at Dakota Wesleyan University.

Individual Awards include: Serious Plays, Deric Denning, fourth; Serious Prose, Bobby Beach Pattison, first; Oratory, Bobby Beach Pattison, second; Poetry, Cassidy Pohlen, first; Humorous, Becca Glanzer, first; Duet, Becca Glanzer and Deric Denning, second place; Readers Theatre: Deric Denning, Becca Glanzer, Phil Millar, Bobby Beach Pattison, Haley Hinker and Erin Denning, second place.

The oral interp coach is Karen Bertsch.

Haley Hinker, Caitlyn Dikoff, Charlie Mahaffey and Bobby Beach Pattison, who were selected by audition, participated in the South Dakota All-State Chorus and Orchestra Nov. 1 and 2 in Sioux Falls. They joined 950 other vocalists from across the state. Alternates selected included Erin Denning, Abby Mahaffey, Jonathan Sweet and Trevor Ferrell. The students presented a concert at 7 p.m. in the Sioux Falls Arena under the direction of guest conductor Joe Miller, associate professor of music at Westminster College.

The event was held in conjunction with the South Dakota Music Education Association Conference.

Mount Vernon Elementary School students Noah Malde, Lily Mikkonen and Logan Tlam were selected to participate in the 16th annual South Dakota Elementary Honor Choir Nov. 2 in Sioux Falls. They joined 190 other vocalists from across the state. The students presented a concert at 3:30 p.m. at the Sioux Falls Convention Center under the direction of guest conductor Sean Burton, associate professor of music at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa. The event was held in conjunction with the All State Chorus and All State Orchestra events. The Mount Vernon K-12 vocal instructor is Alexis Washburn.

Mount Vernon students are participating in the LifeQuest Volunteer program by collecting 370 cans of Spaghettios. By doing this they can help the children of our community.

Activities for Nov. 11-18 include:

Today, the senior government class will present a Veterans Day program at 8:30 a.m. in the Tom Young Community Center. There will be a fifth- and sixth-grade girls’ basketball game in Mount Vernon with Ethan at 4 p.m., followed by the fifth- and sixthgrade boys’ game at 4:45 p.m.

Tuesday, the girls’ regional volleyball tournament will be held at 7 p.m.

Nov. 18 will be a student enrichment/staff development day.

The Mount Vernon Youth Wrestling sign-up will be at 6 p.m. Dec. 3 in the downtown gym. The fee is $30 and includes the AAU card and a T-shirt for the wrestler. Any questions, contact Melissa Mayer at 351-6723.
