PIERRE (AP) -- Jeff Monroe has been named the winner in the Republican District 24 state Senate primary after a recount.

Monroe initially beat out Rep. Tad Perry by 36 votes. Perry requested a recount, which was conducted Monday morning. The media reports that preliminary results of the recount show Monroe lost a vote in Stanley County while both candidates lost a vote in Hughes County. Officials in Hyde and Sully counties say there are no changes to vote totals in those counties.

Perry had said he did not expect the results to change, but he wanted to make sure they were what they appeared to be.

Perry, the former head of South Dakota's university system, is finishing his first two-year term in the House.
