A Mitchell woman is facing three felonies for being arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute while being in a drug-free zone.
On Aug. 31, Malissa Garmong, 30, was arrested after the Mitchell Police Department received information alleging Garmong had possession of illegal drugs that later turned out to be over 6 ounces of methamphetamine, according to the police report.
Garmong —who was on parole at the time of her arrest — stated she couldn’t meet with her parole agent, prompting a police officer and parole agent to contact Garmong at her residence in Hanson County. Upon authorities contacting Garmong, she was found with $1,259 in cash after the officer executed a personal search. While Garmong stated the cash was from her paycheck, officers searched her Hanson County apartment that was located in a drug-free zone and found 6 ounces of methamphetamine.
According to the police report, officers were informed Garmong had additional illegal drugs hidden outside of her apartment. On the following day of her arrest, officers went back to the residence and located three pills and six individual baggies of methamphetamine under a rock outside of her apartment, equating to a half ounce of methamphetamine. Garmong is facing one class 5 felony, and two class 4 felonies for the charges.
Prior to her most recent arrest, in April of 2019, Garmong was sentenced to 10-years in prison with six years suspended for possession of meth with intent to distribute and consecutively to a five-year sentence with three years suspended for possession of a controlled substance.

A judge set her cash bond at $4,000, with the condition of passing a clean Urinary Analysis (UA) test in order for her release.
Thomas Garmong, Malissa’s husband, was also arrested on Aug. 31 for possession of a controlled substance. A judge set a $2,000 cash bond for Thomas Garmong, 38, with the condition of passing twice-weekly UA tests.
