A Mitchell woman was arrested in late October for third-offense drunken driving.

Venessa Lucas, 22, was driving on Sanborn Boulevard on Oct. 30 and law enforcement pulled her over. According to court documents, the arresting officer knew Lucas from previous encounters and knew her driver's license was not valid. The officer checked with dispatch on her license and confirmed it was not valid. It also showed she had a warrant for her arrest in Yankton County.

When an officer pulled Lucas over, the officer says he smelled alcohol coming from Lucas' breath and Lucas had slurred speech. Lucas failed sobriety tests and blew a 0.12 on the breathalyzer. The legal driving limit in South Dakota is 0.08 blood alcohol level.

Third-offense drunk driving carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a $4,000 fine, upon conviction.
