A Mitchell man pleaded guilty Tuesday to grand theft.
Buck Louis James, 18, entered his plea during court at the Davison County Public Safety Center.
He said he wrote checks in September for more than $1,400 at County Fair Food Store without having sufficient funds in his checking account. He told the court he bought some food items and the rest was spent on gift cards. In exchange for his guilty plea, the state agreed to drop several misdemeanor charges.
The maximum penalty is two years in prison, a $4,000 fine or both.
Judge Tim Bjorkman ordered a presentence investigation and scheduled sentencing for December.
