Two South Dakota technical institutes have been deemed the best in the nation.

Mitchell Technical Institute and Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls have been named to the nation's top 150 list of community colleges from the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program.

The list was released Wednesday, and the two technical schools are now eligible to compete for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence and $1 million in prize funds.

Mitchell Tech and Southeast Tech were chosen from a pool of approximately 1,000 public two-year colleges.

Both schools will move forward to next round of the competition and the top 10 finalists will be named in May 2018. The most recent winner of the Aspen Prize in 2017 is Watertown's Lake Area Technical Institute.
