Mitchell School District is opening two hours late.
Superintendent Joe Graves early Tuesday morning said Mitchell schools and John Paul II Elementary will open late due to a winter storm that hit South Dakota.
A swath of snow moved across the Mitchell region overnight. The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls on Monday evening predicted Mitchell to get 4 to 6 inches of snow by Tuesday afternoon.
The Mitchell Department of Public Safety reminds motorists that a snow emergency is declared when 2 inches of snow falls in city limits. Snow emergency routes will be plowed first from curb to curb. Any vehicles on snow emergency routes are subject to being ticketed and towed.
