Streets surrounding the Mitchell Police Division were closed Thursday morning as officials handled a grenade brought to the station.
At approximately 11:50 a.m., a 68-year-old man brought an unexploded grenade to the building to be destroyed after allegedly finding it while helping a friend clean out a building in rural Davison County, northeast of Mitchell, according to police.
As a precaution, streets surrounding the Mitchell Police Division were closed until the grenade was determined to be safe. Then, the explosive was transported to a "secure location," police said, where it will remain until it is destroyed.
Police believe the grenade is a training grenade, but the investigation is ongoing.
A Davison County Sheriff's Office deputy searched the property where the grenade was found and found no others. A deceased relative of the property owner is believed to have acquired the grenade several years ago.

As a result of the incident, police remind the public to never touch or transport explosives, and to instead call 911.
