EMERY -- A Mitchell man was severely injured in a crash early Wednesday morning near Emery.

Levi Grosz, 20, lost control of his vehicle, a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix, shortly before 1 a.m. near the intersection of state Highway 262 and 429th Avenue, according to South Dakota Highway Patrol Capt. Alan Welsh. Grosz was allegedly driving faster than the 30 mph speed limit when he failed to handle a curve, hit a speed limit sign and launched over 429th Avenue. The vehicle rolled and Grosz, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected.

In the immediate aftermath of the crash, the vehicle caught fire. Grosz was moved away from the wreckage moments before the fire started by emergency responders.

Grosz was taken by ambulance to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell with life-threatening injuries, according to Welsh.

The crash is still being investigated by the Highway Patrol.
