A Mitchell man was arrested Tuesday on charges of first-degree rape and attempted sexual contact with a child under the age of 16.
Chad Lee Voeltz, 43, was arrested for allegedly engaging in sexual contact with a child who was visiting his home in 2009 and 2010. According to a press release from the Mitchell Department of Public Safety, the alleged victim was 8 or 9 years old at the time of the incident.
Police say Voeltz is also believed to have attempted to give the child money in exchange for the sexual touching of the victim.
Voeltz faces a charge of first-degree rape, which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment and a fine of $50,000. The charge of sexual contact with a child under the age of 16 is a Class 3 felony, which South Dakota Codified Law states is punishable by 15 years imprisonment and a fine of $30,000.
In 2011, Voeltz was convicted of possessing, manufacturing or distributing child pornography.
