One child suffered minor injuries Monday when a vehicle bumped into him on Burr Street in Mitchell.

Two boys, 11 and 12, were crossing the road at the Fifth Avenue and Burr intersection Monday afternoon when a vehicle ran into them and knocked them over, said Mitchell Police Officer Brian Larson.

“They were going to cross there, and they looked up and saw people trying to wave them across,” Larson said. “Then another person was making a southbound turn from Fifth to go south on Burr.”

Teresa Mayer, 36, of Mitchell, told Larson she didn’t see the boys because the sun was in her eyes.

The boys told him they also did not see Mayer’s vehicle as they crossed.

Mayer’s vehicle bumped into the children and caused minor bumps and scratches to the 12-year-old. The 11-year-old boy was not injured, Larson said.

No citations were issued.

“It’s just all about being alert and paying attention to your surroundings,” Larson said. “You never know when someone is going to run out in front of you.”
