Mitchell Middle School was recently named the Power of ICU Spotlight School of the Month for February.

ICU is a program used at the school and other schools around the country. The acronym is inspired by intensive care units at hospitals.

Author/consultant Danny Hill had high praise for MMS.

"I work with hundreds of schools across the United States in using the Power of ICU as the catalyst for school improvement," Hill said in a news release. "(Principal) Brad Berens and his staff at Mitchell have created one of the best 'student-centered' cultures I have witnessed. I would want my children at Mitchell Middle School."

These are the three main criteria for a school to receive the Spotlight School award:

1. Every student completes every assignment.

2. Mandatory extra time and extra help for all students.

3. Transformation of student grades to reflect learning.

Receiving the Spotlight School Award means that highlights from the way Mitchell Middle School conducts the program are being shared with about 800 other schools in the early stages of implementing the ICU program.

"Just like in a hospital, if a patient is just a little bit sick, only a little bit of professional attention is needed," the ICU news release said. "However, if a patient is very sick, then several doctors and nurses will be needed to get healthy."
