Naomi Powers, a freshman at Mitchell High School, will perform today with the Minnesota Sinfonia, a professional orchestra based in the Twin Cities. Powers, who plays the violin, won the junior division of the Sinfonia's Young Artist String Competition in March.
By winning her division against other seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-graders, Powers earned the prize of performing with the Sinfonia during their annual holiday concert, according to Naomi's mother, Shiori Powers.
The event will feature seasonal music from the orchestra, as well as solo performances by Powers, and by the winner of the senior division. Powers will be performing "Preludium and Allegro" by Fritz Kreisler. A rehearsal was held Friday in St. Paul, Minn., and the concert is at 2 p.m. today at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis. There is no admission charge.
