SALEM - A government building in Salem requires minor repairs following a fire on Friday.
The building caught fire after a welding mishap during construction of a hoop barn, according to Salem Fire Chief Nathan Olinger.
At approximately 6:40 p.m. on Friday, Salem firefighters responded to the 300 block of West Norton Avenue in Salem when the wall of an under-construction steel hoop barn caught fire during welding, Olinger said.
The barn is being constructed by the McCook County Highway Department, Olinger said, and is located adjacent to the department's existing structure on Norton Avenue.
Olinger said the fire department extinguished the blaze in approximately 15 minutes. No one was injured, and the fire only caused cosmetic damage, but part of the steel wall will have to be replaced after firefighters tore into it to access the fire.

Because the barn is being constructed from repurposed steel, Olinger expects repairs to cost less than $500.
