Marvin Dale "Spike" Schelske, 73, Springfield, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent Catholic Church, Springfield, with the Rev. Ken Johnson of Our Savior Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Springfield Cemetery, Springfield, with military honors. Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Springfield. There will be a 7 p.m. prayer service Sunday at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Springfield.

He was born on Feb. 9, 1935, in Tripp to Arthur and Edna (Herr) Schelske.

He attended country schools and graduated from Scotland High School.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1955.

He received a degree in motel management in 1972 and graduated from the University of South Dakota, Springfield, in 1977 with a degree in business management.

He worked as a lineman and electrical inspector for transmission lines for 40 years with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, out of Local 426 in Sioux Falls, retiring in 1999.

On June 6, 1970, he married Fern Kramer at St. Paul, Minn.

They owned and operated the Wagon Wheel Inn in Springfield since 1981.

He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and served on the board there, the Dwight Wood American Legion Post No. 132, VFW and a retired member of the IBEW.

He is survived by his wife, five children: Rebecca Nyland and husband Norman, Sabin, Minn.; Daniel and wife Toni, Post Falls, Idaho; Gwen Thomson and husband Donald, Madison; Darren and wife Connie, Brookings; and David, Nashville; 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two sisters: Eldora Baumiller, Scotland; and Kathleen Mudloff and husband David, Olathe, Kan.; a brother, Norman and wife DiAnn, Springfield; in-laws: Beatrice Schelske, Jane Schelske, Carol Thomson, Betty and Michael Daulton, Joan Baker, Joan Bloomer and Louella Abblitner; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Leola Kizer; and four brothers: Wilbur, in infancy; Eldon, Willard and Donald.
