VIVIAN-A Sioux Falls man was charged Saturday in Lyman County with threatening a law enforcement officer with a knife while being transported to jail for a DUI.
Earlier that day, the South Dakota Highway Patrol was notified of a tan Chevy Silverado traveling at a high rate of speed on Interstate 90 in Lyman County. An officer reportedly found the vehicle parked at a Vivian business, then saw the vehicle traveling north on U.S. Highway 83 at 96 mph and crossing the center line.
The car was allegedly driven by 53-year-old Antonio Hampton, who told the officer he was traveling to Iowa. Hampton reportedly gave a PBT of 0.177 and was arrested for a first-offense DUI.
While being transported to jail, Hampton allegedly took out a pocket knife and threatened to use it, saying he "wasn't going back to prison," according to court documents. At the jail, Hampton was told repeatedly to drop the knife and was eventually tased by a Chamberlain police officer, allowing law enforcement to safely take the knife out of Hampton's hands.
Hampton is charged with aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer, a Class 2 felony; a first-offense DUI and obstructing police, both of which are Class 1 misdemeanors; and speeding on a four-lane road in a rural area and intentional damage to property of $400 or less, which are Class 2 misdemeanors. If convicted on all charges, he could face more than 27 years of incarceration.
