A medical issue was the likely cause of a two-vehicle accident Monday night in Mitchell.

Sgt. Mike Koster of the Mitchell Police Division said Darwin Buus, 80, of Mitchell, was driving eastbound at 7:34 p.m. in his 2002 Dodge Intrepid on West 23rd Avenue, near Northridge Baptist Church.

Marvin Schryvers, 75, also of Mitchell, was westbound on West 23rd Avenue in his 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier.

Koster said according to Buus, Schryvers' vehicle was drifting across the road. Buus pulled over to the side of the road and was struck head-on by Schryvers' car. "It sounds like (the impact) was very low-speed," Koster said.

Buus was in his vehicle at the time of the crash and was not injured. Schryvers' airbag deployed and hit him in the face and the head, which caused minor injuries, Koster said.

Schryvers refused to be transported by ambulance. His wife came to the scene of the accident, Koster said.

No citations were issued, but due to the medical issue, Schryvers will be reviewed and retested for his driver's license, Koster said.
