Luther Gene Herbert, 59, Chamberlain, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at VA Medical Center, Sioux Falls.
Private family services are planned.
Arrangements are under the direction of Miller Funeral Home, Sioux Falls.
He was born on Sept. 16, 1949, in Yankton to Elmer and Edna (Weichmann) Herbert.
He graduated from Vermillion High School and then the University of South Dakota, Vermillion.

He was career military, serving stateside before returning to South Dakota, where he was a professor of military science at South Dakota State University, Brookings, before retiring in 1991.
He is survived by his wife, Vicki; a son, Mark and wife Destiny; a daughter, Laurie Larson and husband Greg; three grandchildren, his mother, Edna Uecker; and two sisters: Raye Payer and Kaye Asper.
