LOWER BRULE, S.D. — Three people are dead, including one suspect, following a shooting in Lower Brule early Monday morning, according to Lower Brule Sioux Tribe Chairman Boyd Gourneau.

Gourneau said he received a call about the incident around 4 a.m. on Monday, August 11. He confirmed that two individuals were killed and identified as victims. Three suspects have been identified in connection with the shooting: one is in custody, one died from a self-inflicted injury, and one remains at large.

Authorities believe the suspect who died was the active shooter. Gourneau said officials are confident the remaining suspect has left the area and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.

While Gourneau did not have confirmed details about the location of the incident, community reports indicate it may have taken place at an old boat ramp following a powwow.

It is not yet confirmed where the suspect in custody was taken. Gourneau suggested the individual may have been transported to either Pierre or Winner, noting that the case may be handled as a federal matter.

Counseling services are available at both the community center and the school for those seeking support. Individuals can also contact Indian Health Service at 605-473-5526. The investigation is ongoing.
