The shooting occurred around 4 a.m. on Aug. 11, 2025, at an old boat ramp following a powwow, resulting in the deaths of two victims, identified as Tayshawn Battese and Teron Sazue. Both victims were members of their respective communities who played basketball and football and were recognized for their contributions to uniting the Crow Creek and Lower Brule communities. In a joint statement, Crow Creek Chairman Peter Lengkeek and Lower Brule Chairman Boyd Gourneau described Battese as a young man of few words with a notable presence, and Sazue as someone who greeted everyone warmly.

Friends and family of the victims held a candlelight vigil Monday night at the old boat ramp.

The FBI is handling the case. The investigation is ongoing.
