MITCHELL -- Mitchell's Indoor Aquatic Center is back in action after a nine-month closure that left city leaders and community members frustrated.

The facility reopened on Monday, which marked an end to a near year-long repair job.

"We finally got it up and running. It was a great day to see it open again and members getting back in the water," Recreation Center Director Kevin DeVries said of the reopening.

Although the multimillion-dollar pool facility is in its fourth year of existence, the city was forced to shut down the aquatic center in July due to the plaster surfacing deteriorating.

While the pool is open again, DeVries said the facility is facing a lifeguard shortage, which has altered the open swim times with accessibility to the slides.

Costs of the repair work have yet to be released to the public. Mayor Bob Everson has stood firm in his stance that the city should have no financial obligation to pay for the repair work, as the surfacing issues began while the pool was under warranty.
