To the Editor:

A recent letter to your paper says homosexuality isn't approved of in the Bible.

Jesus said nothing against homosexuality. There are over 600 references to slavery in the Bible, many in favor, and yet we've managed to outlaw slavery in this country. There are only the seven major Biblical passages that have been used over and over to bash gay and lesbian citizens of this country. However, we don't live under the rules of the Bible. We live under the rules of law adopted by our legislators and codified in the nation's and the many states' books of law. All of these laws are governed by the Constitution of the United States.

Now, the people can change all the constitutions you like to ban same-sex marriage, but that doesn't make it right. The Supreme Court in Romer v. Evans concluded that gays and lesbians are a class of citizens that have been dicriminated against over and over. And now the discrimination is religious in nature -- it amounts to religious persecution, pure and simple. In process now, the California Prop 8 case, that has now found the passage of a law there against the Constitution of the United States. Numerous courts are now finding The Defense of Marriage Act to be unconstitutional.

The Bible is not one book to rule them all. We live under the Constitution and under that document, people are guaranteed to be treated equally under it. And that is why continued violence, hatred and discrimination against gays and lesbians must end.
