BROOKINGS -- The Mitchell High School girls' golf team continued its strong start to the season Monday with a second-place finish at the Brookings Quad at Brookings Country Club.
On a chilly, windy afternoon, the Kernels shot a 386 to finish behind only four-time defending state champion Brookings. The Bobcats won the meet with a 360, largely because Morgan Fitts' 75 was 13 strokes better than anybody else at the meet and 18 strokes better than Mitchell's best individual score.
Like everybody in the meet, Mitchell's golfers battled strong winds and posted scores that were a bit higher than the last time out in Yankton.
"It was less than 50 degrees and about 40 mile per hour winds," Mitchell coach Mark Horan said. "That obviously had a lot do with the scores."
Abby Bollinger stayed hot for the Kernels, tying for the team-best score with a 93. Courtney Kirby also had a 93, and both golfers tied for fourth at the meet.

"Courtney Kirby really stood out today as somebody that really played well in the weather," Horan said. "So did Abby Bollinger again on a sore ankle."
Kendra Cersosimo, who had her first sub-100 score in competition last week in Yankton, followed that with another 100, despite the poor scoring conditions. That tied her with teammate Kristin Sabers. Chelsea Boddicker finished with a 107 and Karlie McEntee had a 113.
Watertown took third with a 408 and Madison was fourth at 416. Brookings' Dani Selberg took second individually with an 88 and Watertown's Kalli Gottsleben was third with a 90.
Mitchell will be back in action Friday for the Mitchell Invite. The shotgun start will be at 10:30 a.m.
