John Eugene Langenfeld, 85, Rapid City, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, Rapid City, while walking to church.
Funeral services were Dec. 27, 2008, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Rapid City. Burial followed in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Rapid City
Funeral services are under the direction of Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, Rapid City.
He was born Oct. 30, 1923, in Watertown, to Matt Langenfeld Sr. and Helena (Neisen) Langenfeld.
He graduated from Watertown High School in 1941, and attended Regis University in Denver, Colo., prior to joining the family ice cream business, Langenfeld's Ice Cream Company, which was begun by his father as a dairy in Watertown.

He married Margaret Mary Neville, of Fairbury, Neb., and lived in Mitchell.
They moved to Rapid City in 1959.
In 1967, John started his second career, working in sales in various investment and service industries. He retired from Black Hills Chemical in 1991.
To form a lasting tribute to the Langenfeld's Ice Cream era, John contributed memorabilia to the Redlin Art Center in Watertown that was facilitated by his niece, Helene Redlin.
He spent the past 22 years supporting his wife's memorial fund to the Dahl Fine Arts scholarship program.
He is survived by children: Theresa Ruscio and husband Dominic, Westminster, Colo.; Catherine Perry, Huron; Mary Weller and husband Brett, Hudson, Wis.; Dr. John and wife Elaine, Flemington, N.J.; Gretchen Clayborne and husband Andre, Sioux Falls; Frances Henderson and husband David, Rapid City; Ann Kellar and husband Jon, Rapid City; Jennifer Lande and husband Michael, Skokie, Ill.; 24 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and brothers and sisters.
