ALLISON, Iowa (AP) -- A 40-year-old man has been given a life sentence for stabbing his wife to death at their home in northern Iowa.

Thomas Petersen, of Greene, had been convicted in April of killing his 36-year-old wife, Judy. Petersen was sentenced on Monday.

Prosecutors say Greene inflicted more than 120 wounds on his wife, using three knives. Petersen said on the stand that he was "stabbing at" his wife last year but denied that murder was on his mind.

Petersen was arrested several hours after the stabbing, near Kadoka, after a chase by officers. The couple's 2-year-old son, Jacob, was with Petersen during the chase but was not injured.

Petersen has said he intends to appeal.
