A 24-year-old inmate attempted to hang himself using a bedsheet in his cell Friday at the Davison County Jail in Mitchell
Don Radel, the jail's administrator, told The Daily Republic that the inmate was not seriously hurt, but was still examined by paramedics and taken to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell after the incident.
The inmate was discovered in his cell shortly before noon by staff members at the jail who were passing out medications to other inmates, Radel said. The staff members called for assistance, and the inmate was cut down and taken to the hospital before being returned to jail later in the day.
There is no indication of any foul play because the inmate was alone in his cell when the incident occurred, Radel said.
Radel declined to release the name of the inmate, who was in jail for a parole violation out of Aurora County and was waiting to be transported to prison.

It has been less than three months since another inmate, 39-year-old Donald Kindt, died in a hospital a few days after attempting to hang himself in his cell at the jail. Kindt was in jail awaiting trial for his alleged involvement in manufacturing methamphetamine at an apartment in Mitchell.
