SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - The husband of a Sioux Falls woman facing an animal neglect charge for leaving a Siberian husky out in the cold says the allegation is ridiculous.
Neighbors of 30-year-old Jessica Swain say she left the dog in subzero cold for at least three hours. She's charged with misdemeanor animal neglect.
Husband Lamar Swain says the allegation is tied to a neighbor dispute. He also tells the Argus Leader the husky was let into the house several times during the three-hour period, and that the dog has been returned after a veterinarian found no evidence of frostbite.
City Animal Control Supervisor Julie DeJong says authorities took wind chill and lack of shelter into account. She says huskies are more resilient to cold, but they still need a doghouse.
