PIERRE (AP) -- Commissioners in South Dakota's Hughes County are considering doubling the county's wheel tax to raise more money for roads.
The media reports that commissioners have given initial approval to doubling the tax of $2 per wheel and $8 per vehicle. A final vote is set for July 2.
Proposals to increase the county wheel tax have failed in the past. Voters overwhelmingly defeated a referred measure in 1995, and in 2008 county commissioners voted narrowly to reject another proposal after a Pierre resident threatened to refer it.
