DE SMET -- Horizon Health Care Inc., based in Howard, recently received a $1.04 million grant to expand dental and medical access in De Smet.
De Smet's Horizon Health Care Clinic is housed in the local hospital, which plans to use that space in the near future. The grant is provided through the national Affordable Care Act and will provide access for approximately 2,500 new patients.
"This grant will help us to continue to provide close-to-home access to preventive dental care in a cost-effective setting," said John Mengenhausen, CEO of Horizon Health Care, in a news release. "It will expand our ability to provide high-quality care as well as create jobs in the De Smet community."
The company will break ground on the 9,000-square-foot facility in August. It will include six dental exam rooms, one of which will be fully handicap accessible; six medical exam rooms; office space; reception space; and waiting room areas. The clinic will produce four new positions and will have 20 fulltime employees.
Horizon provides care in 17 communities, including Bryant, De Smet, Howard, Huron, Lake Preston, Martin, Mission, Plankinton, Springfield, Wessington Springs, White River and Woonsocket.
