GREGORY - A Gregory man was sentenced to eight years in prison for causing "severe trauma" to a woman after she asked him to watch her child and he wanted to nap.

Whitney Covey, 35, pleaded guilty in December to domestic abuse aggravated assault causing bodily injury with indifference to human life, and was sentenced last week to 15 years in prison with seven years suspended and credit for 196 days served. Covey was also ordered to pay more than $12,000 in fines.

Charges of second-degree attempted murder, aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, choking, abuse or cruelty to a minor younger than 7 years old, second-degree kidnapping, interference with emergency communications and resisting arrest were dismissed.

The charges stem from a July 13, 2017, incident in which Covey engaged in "45 minutes of nonstop assault," according to court documents.

The assault began when a woman asked Covey to watch her 2-year-old while she took a shower, but Covey wanted to take a nap instead. He allegedly head-butted the victim, then grabbed her head and hit it several times on the stove. He continued the assault, biting her stomach and face and strangling her with the necklace she was wearing.

Covey "would not allow her to leave the house and kept dragging her back each time she attempted to leave," court documents state. He threw the victim against her 2-year-old child and he jumped on the mother and child.

The victim stated she "was in fear of her life and Covey said was not going to stop until she was dead." Throughout the alleged assault, Covey stated, "I'm going to kill you. You are going to die," according to court documents.

She was eventually knocked unconscious and when she awoke, she fought against Covey, biting him and grabbing him in the genitals before running away to call police.

When police arrived, Covey said he "would fight any officer that came into the residence and that he wouldn't go down without a good fight," according to a police affidavit. He later was placed without incident into the back of an officer's vehicle.

The maximum sentence for domestic abuse aggravated assault causing bodily injury with indifference to human life, a Class 3 felony, is 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine.
