PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Gov. Mike Rounds has been conducting personal interviews with people who have been recommended to fill a soon-to-be vacant state Supreme Court spot.
Justice Richard Sabers is retiring after serving on the high court since 1986. He reached the mandatory retirement age of 70 last year, and his retirement is effective Tuesday.
Rounds' press secretary, Joe Kafka, says Rounds already has met with some of those recommended by the Judicial Qualifications Committee and that more interviews are scheduled.
It's not known how long it will take for the governor to make the appointment. It will be the second-term governor's first chance to appoint a Supreme Court justice.
The most recent appointments to the state Supreme Court were in 2002.
