The Mitchell City Council will consider approving the purchase of a property along Lake Mitchell on Monday night, which will set the city up to construct the Dailey Drive lift station.
According to City Engineer Joe Schroeder’s document attached to the council’s agenda, the new location for the lift station that the city is seeking to purchase at a cost of $15,000 sits along the northeast side of North Harmon Drive and 407th Avenue. The council will vote on the purchase of the land during Monday’s 6 p.m. meeting at City Hall.
The Daily Drive lift station project is estimated to cost roughly $2.8 million, which will replace the entire lift station. Schroeder noted the new location will reduce the likelihood of backups occurring in nearby residents’ basements due to the elevation change from the old lift station. In 2019, many of the city’s lift stations were exhausted by two record breaking rain events in the spring and fall.
In addition, Schroeder noted the new proposed lift station location will be shielded by a mature shelter belt. The 3,600 square foot property is owned by CJM Consulting.
The city identified the location with the assistance from SPN & Associates, a local civil engineering and surveying firm.
According to Terry Aker, civil engineer with SPN and Associates, the typical life expectancy for the city’s lift stations hover around 30 years. During a previous council meeting, Aker noted Mitchell has several that are 50 years or older. Of the city’s 14 lift stations, Aker said at least 12 are in need of some sort of improvement.
The lift stations are critical infrastructure in the city, as they are responsible for draining wastewater, which flows into a tank and gets pumped out to the sewer lines throughout the city.

Approve street closure request for VFW Post 2750 for the Chili Cook-off on Nov. 8. The 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. street closure will close Main Street from Second to Fourth Avenue, along with Third Avenue from Main Street to Rowley Street.
Approve Resolution No. R2020-73, declaring real property at 40580 250th St. to be surplus. A board will be appointed to appraise and authorize the sale of the property. The property is the home that came with the city’s purchase of the Kelly property for the wetland.
