PIERRE, S.D. — After being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer in June, former South Dakota First Lady Jean Rounds appears to be on the road to recovery.

According to a Thursday, Aug. 8, news release from her husband U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds' office, Jean Rounds has undergone several rounds of chemotherapy, with good results: Her tumor has reportedly shrunk in half, and there are no signs that the tumor is spreading or metastasizing.

Rounds has been treated at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., since doctors found an aggressive tumor near her sciatic nerve in June. Her treatment includes three days of chemotherapy, followed by 18 days of recovery, which appear to be working and will continue.

The couple said the news is "a testament to the power of prayer," and that they "have been overwhelmed by the support and prayers of so many."

"We could not have made it through the past several months without our family and South Dakota community behind us," they said in Thursday's release. "For that, we are eternally grateful."
