Q: Why are all the “No Texting While Driving” signs posted at city limits, with none on the busier streets inside Mitchell?
A: Mitchell Chief of Public Safety Lyndon Overweg said the city is awaiting approval to place “No Texting While Driving” signs on the state highways that run through Mitchell - Highway 37, which is Burr Street; the Highway 37 bypass; and Highway 38, which is Havens Avenue.
The city already has signs ordered to place in those locations and other locations throughout town. The signs will likely be put on one post or attached to existing sign posts, Overweg said.
The city also plans to place signs along Sanborn Boulevard and in the North Main Street area.
A recently approved grant will help pay for billboards informing the public that texting and driving within the city of Mitchell is illegal. The grant also pays for police officer overtime and enforcement of the law, Overweg said.
