The Mitchell Board of Education on Tuesday will finalize the hiring of four new head coaches for four varsity sports.

The board meeting will take place at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Mitchell Technical Institute cafeteria.

According to the board agenda, which was released Friday, Audra Rew will be hired as the head gymnastics coach, Travis Carpenter as the head wrestling coach, Mark Horan as the head girls' golf coach and Mark Budahl as the head boys' golf coach.

Also, the board is expected to hire Budahl as the assistant varsity girls' golf coach, Joshua Davies as the freshman girls' basketball coach and Horan as the assistant varsity boys' golf coach.

Three of the positions became open when Andy Tate, who had been the head wrestling and head girls' and boys' golf coach, resigned from the school this past week.

Rew takes over the gymnastics program from the departed Jennifer VanDerMillen, who resigned in May when she took the Sioux Falls Roosevelt activities director job. Rew had been a gymnastics assistant coach at MHS from 1993-97. She was also an assistant coach at Fargo, N.D., South High School before moving to Mitchell in 1992.

The MHS gymnastics team took second place at last year's Class AA state meet and returns individual state champion Brooke Cersosimo.

Rew also has a daughter on the varsity team in freshman Amelia Rew. Rew already coaches some of the varsity gymnasts through the Mitchell Extreme Gymnastics Association, which was started last year by Mitchell Parks and Recreation.

"I enjoy working with the girls and this will be nice continuity for them," Rew said. "It's a nice group of girls. They all spend time together and they've been going to camps all summer. It's comfortable for me to take this job because I'm so familiar with them."

Carpenter had been the assistant varsity wrestling coach and is also an assistant on the MHS football team. Horan had been the assistant varsity girls' golf coach, but wasn't on the boys' side. Budahl was previously a co-coach for the girls' and boys' varsity golf teams around 1999-2002.

MHS Activities Director Scott VanDerMillen could not be reached for comment Friday.

According to the MHS athletics Web site, Jody Childs is the new head boys' and girls' cross country coach. His name isn't on the list of new hires, according to the agenda. Childs will replace Alan Miller in that position. Miller left the school district this past year, but will remain on as an assistant coach for the MHS boys' basketball team.

Rew will remain as the head coach of MEGA, but will receive help from assistant Barb Bauder, a former MHS gymnastics head coach. Rew said she is anticipating around 18 athletes coming out for gymnastics this year.

"The girls are motivated," she said. "They're not satisfied with last year and they've done a lot to improve themselves. They've spent around 7-8 weeks at camps this summer. They want to keep working and do the best they can."

Some of the top returnees to the gymnastics team include Cersosimo, Rew, sophomore Tessa Dee, junior Christy Wittstruck, freshman Kendell Smith and senior Abby Deinert.

Rew said she first expressed an interest in the job around June 15. She interviewed for it shortly after that and received word she got the job at the end of month.
