Brother rescues sibling from burning house in Aberdeen
ABERDEEN, S.D. — The oldest of three children went back into a burning trailer home to rescue his sister Tuesday morning, June 11, according to Aberdeen Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Stacy Vrchota.
The fire was reported shortly before 8 a.m. in the Park Village mobile home court on 12th Avenue Southwest near U.S. Highway 281, Aberdeen American News reported. Vrchota said smoke from the fire was reported by a trooper from the South Dakota Highway Patrol who was passing on the highway. The mobile home had considerable damage following the fire.
Vrchota said three children, the oldest of whom was 14, were home at the time of the fire. Both parents were at work, he said. The children were checked out at the hospital, but are doing fine, he said.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames outside of the home, but the fire was quickly contained and none of the surrounding homes were damaged, he said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
